SEATRU Student Internship/Attachment Programme

Period:

April to October

Location:

Chagar Hutang, Redang Island, Malaysia

Background Information:

Undergraduates from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and other universities (local or international) are given the opportunity to have "hands-on" experience on turtle conservation work. Students are accepted in the internship programme where they assist in the tagging and nesting research project at Chagar Hutang as well as helping Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) in various interesting projects.  Living conditions are very basic and help bring the students "back to nature." For most of them, it is the first encounter with turtles, and the renowned Redang Island. All students who have gone through this programme have found it to be a most rewarding experience.

Duties:

  • Assisting SEATRU's volunteer program every week.
  • Conduct sea turtle nesting surveys. This work includes marking, relocating, and excavating sea turtle nests and recording all necessary data under the supervision of a research assistant and along with other volunteers.
  • Assisting with SEATRU's outreach programs.
  • Entering data and/or creating materials using Word, Excel, Access, or other software.

Requirements:

Student of BS or BA in the biological sciences or allied field and a minimum 3.00 GCPA. Experience preferred but not required. Applicants must be able to tolerate adverse field conditions. This is an outdoor project so applicants need to have a strong interest in field biology and really big turtles. Passionate on wildlife conservation.

Benefits/Costs:

NO SALARY. However, interns will be provided accommodation, food and all basic necessities on the island.

Additional Contact Information:

Interested applicants must send a cover letter (from university) and resume via email to Dr. Juanita Joseph (juanita@umt.edu.my).
