[MARINE_BIOLOGY_INTERNATIONAL] Dead whale towed tos Channel Islands Harbor

Santa Barbara, CA - A dead whale found in local waters was towed into Channel Islands Harbor late Sunday night, and researchers this afternoon were preparing to transport it to Santa Barbara for dissection, authorities said.

The whale was spotted Sunday by a Santa Barbara-based dive boat and towed into the harbor for research, said Officer James Hrabak of the Channel Islands Harbor Patrol.

Members of the Cascadia Research Collective were on the boat that spotted the whale, said the officer. The collective is an Olympia, Washington-based non-profit that researches the management and protection of threatened marine mammals.

Researchers this afternoon were pulling the whale out of the water at the harbor's launch ramp to take it to Santa Barbara for dissection, Hrabak said.

The whale was about 22-feet long and black in color, Hrabak said. Serious decay was visible on the animal, he added.
