RAEL'S COMMENT: The United States should apologize and pay huge damages to Japan and the families of those killed or hurt. In addition, President Harry Truman, who ordered the bombing, and Colonel Paul Tibbets, who piloted the plane that dropped the bomb, should be declared the worst criminals against humanity in human history. International law clearly defines any targeting of civilians as a war crime. Hiroshima was not a military target but a city full of innocent children, women and elderly people. This was not only a crime against humanity, but genocide. Throughout the history of humanity, no other criminal has killed 300,000 civilians in one second – not even Adolf Hitler, Attila or Genghis Khan. Fanatic American citizens who claim the atomic bomb was a correct answer to Pearl Harbor are completely wrong: the Japanese military attacked and destroyed  military ships at Pearl Harbor, not the city and the civilians. If the United States had sent the atomic bomb against an army and killed 300,000 soldiers, that would have been OK and a normal act of war. But targeting a city full of civilians is by all standards a war crime. It's genocide and a crime against humanity.

US attends first Hiroshima atomic bomb anniversary

Representatives from 74 nations - including the US, for the first time - gathered to mark the moment the bomb was dropped

The Japanese city of Hiroshima is marking the 65th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack.

For the first time, a representative of the United States, which dropped the bomb on the city, is attending.

About 140,000 people were killed or died within months of the bomb being dropped by a US aircraft in 1945 in the final days of World War II.

Japan surrendered after a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later on 9 August.

The site where the bomb was dropped 65 years ago was filled with the sound of choirs of school children and the solemn ringing of bells.

A minute's silence was held at 0815 - the exact time the bomb fell.

Offerings of water were made to the 140,000 who died, as many died of thirst in the days and weeks after the attack.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who was also attending the ceremony for the first time, presented flowers at the Eternal Flame in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park.

"Life is short, but memory is long," he said.

"For many of you, that day endures... as vivid as the white light that seared the sky, as dark as the black rains that followed."

He told the gathered crowd of 55,000 people from 74 nations that the time had come to move from "Ground Zero, to Global Zero" - a world without any nuclear weapons.

Japan, the only country to have been attacked with nuclear weapons, has been pushing for their abolition.

Top objective

Hiroshima's mayor welcomed Washington's decision to send US Ambassador John Roos, saying he hoped the event would boost global denuclearisation.

Mr Roos said the memorial was a chance to show resolve towards nuclear disarmament, which US President Barack Obama has said is a top objective.

"For the sake of future generations, we must continue to work together to realise a world without nuclear weapons," Mr Roos said in a statement.

The presence of Mr Roos is being seen by some in Japan as a sign that President Obama may visit Hiroshima when he comes to Japan.

If so, he would be the first sitting US president to visit the city.

Some Japanese have called on the US to apologise for the atomic bombings, but the BBC's Roland Buerk, in Hiroshima, says this is unlikely to happen.

WARNING FROM RAEL: For those who don't use their intelligence at its full capacity, the label "selected by RAEL" on some articles does not mean that I agree with their content or support it. "Selected by RAEL" means that I believe it is important for the people of this planet to know about what people think or do, even when what they think or do is completely stupid and against our philosophy. When I selected articles in the past about stupid Christian fundamentalists in America praying for rain, I am sure no Rael-Science reader was stupid enough to believe that I was supporting praying to change the weather. So, when I select articles which are in favor of drugs, anti-semitic, anti-Jewish, racist, revisionist, or inciting hatred against any group or religion, or any other stupid article, it does not mean that I support them. It just means that it is important for all human beings to know about them. Common sense, which is usually very good among our readers, is good enough to understand that. When, like in the recent articles on drug decriminalization, it is necessary to make it clearer, I add a comment, which in this case was very clear: I support decriminalizing all drugs, as it is stupid to throw depressed and sad people (as only depressed and sad people use drugs) in prison and ruin their life with a criminal record. That does not mean that there is any change to the Message which says clearly that we must not use any drug except for medical purposes. The same applies to the freedom of expression which must be absolute. That does not mean again of course that I agree with anti-Jews, antisemites, racists of any kind or anti-Raelians. But by knowing your enemies or the enemies of your values, you are better equipped to fight them. With love and respect of course, and with the wonderful sentence of the French philosopher Voltaire in mind: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

"Ethics"  is simply a last-gasp attempt by deist conservatives and
orthodox dogmatics to keep humanity in ignorance and obscurantism,
through the well tried fermentation of fear, the fear of science and
new technologies.

There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history,
it is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations.

On the contrary, let us embrace Science and the new technologies
unfettered, for it is these which will liberate mankind from the
myth of god, and free us from our age old fears, from disease,
death and the sweat of labour.
