BONITA SPRINGS: Hundreds, possibly thousands of fighting conchs washed ashore at Bonita Beach. Biologists are trying to figure out what happened.
Lee County's environmental engineering department took water samples along the shoreline and found the oxygen and salt levels to be normal.

Even with the normal test results, they took additional samples.

"It's hard to try to find the dead ones. Most of them are alive, but when you dig underneath you find the dead ones," said Kathleen Smith of Estero.

It is illegal in Lee County to take the conchs if they are alive.

Several of the conchs were taken to a lab in St. Petersburg. Test results are expected in a few days.
