George Soros donates $1 million to campaign to legalise cannabis
Billionaire George Soros donated $1 million (£630,000) on Tuesday to a campaign to legalise marijuana in California through an initiative placed on ballots in the November 2 election.
The Drug Policy Alliance, which aims to decriminalise drug use in the United States, confirmed that the Hungarian-born American philanthropist donated the money to its "Proposition 19" campaign.
Mr Soros had announced his support in a Wall Street Journal column earlier on Tuesday but did not disclose the details of the donation.
Legalising the recreational use and small-scale cultivation of marijuana and regulating and taxing its sale "would represent a major step forward, and its deficiencies can be corrected on the basis of experience," Mr Soros wrote.
"Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, while providing many billions of dollars in revenue annually," he wrote.
"It also would reduce the crime, violence and corruption associated with drug markets, and the violations of civil liberties and human rights that occur when large numbers of otherwise law-abiding citizens are subject to arrest. Police could focus on serious crime instead."
California authorised the use of marijuana for medical use in 1996.
Proposition 19, or the "Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010" would allow people over the age of 21 to possess, cultivate, or transport marijuana for "personal use." It would also permit local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sales.
Federal law enforcement agencies have vowed to aggressively go after marijuana possession and cultivation even if the proposition passes.

just means that it is important for all human beings to know about them. Common
sense, which is usually very good among our readers, is good enough to
understand that. When, like in the recent articles on drug decriminalization, it
is necessary to make it clearer, I add a comment, which in this case was very
clear: I support decriminalizing all drugs, as it is stupid to throw depressed
and sad people (as only depressed and sad people use drugs) in prison and ruin
their life with a criminal record. That does not mean that there is any change
to the Message which says clearly that we must not use any drug except for
medical purposes. The same applies to the freedom of expression which must be
absolute. That does not mean again of course that I agree with anti-Jews,
antisemites, racists of any kind or anti-Raelians. But by knowing your enemies
or the enemies of your values, you are better equipped to fight them. With love
and respect of course, and with the wonderful sentence of the French philosopher
Voltaire in mind: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death
your right to say it".

"Ethics" is simply a last-gasp attempt by deist conservatives and
orthodox dogmatics to keep humanity in ignorance and obscurantism,
through the well tried fermentation of fear, the fear of science and
new technologies.
There is nothing glorious about what our ancestors call history,
it is simply a succession of mistakes, intolerances and violations.
On the contrary, let us embrace Science and the new technologies
unfettered, for it is these which will liberate mankind from the
myth of god, and free us from our age old fears, from disease,
death and the sweat of labour.
