The NAES' 39th Annual Conference is being hosted by Claremont Graduate University. Made up of nine schools, including Arts & Humanities, Educational Studies, Religion and Community and Global Health, CGU fosters faculty and graduate research in ethnic studies in a variety of disciplines. THE NEW RACISM: ILLUSIONS OF EQUALITY AND THE ASSAULT ON ETHNIC STUDIES
The National Association for Ethnic Studies invites abstracts/proposals or papers, panels, workshops, or media productions from people in all disciplines and interdisciplinary areas of the arts, business, social sciences, humanities, science and education on current manifestations of racism and ethnic bias in the US, where ethnic studies as a discipline is under siege in schools and universities. What is the national discourse on race? How have race and ethnicity been characterized in popular media and education, as well as local and national politics? How is the treatment of racism exemplified by the emphasis on undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America? How are claims of nationalism and reverse racism being used against ethnic studies? How has post-racial ideology become part of our thinking, education, and legislation?
The conference will create a lively forum for the discussion of issues related to the conference theme, including, but not limited to the following: AB 1070, HB 2281 and other racialized legislative attacks on immigrants and communities of color; the legacy of the Civil War, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Brown v. Board of Education; racism's intersections with gender and sexuality; Obama nation; model minorities; assimilation; sovereignty rights; profiling; curricula in schools; managing and marketing diversity; affirmative action; mixed-race identity; resistance to post-racialism; patriotism, nationalism and xenophobia; statelessness; colorblind casting; whiteness studies; hate groups; the new genetics; race and sports; color blind medicine and public health; social welfare policy; dual citizenship; ethnomusicology; representations of colorblind racism in literature and visual art; performing race.
Two-hundred-fifty-word abstracts/proposals should be submitted by December 15, 2010, which relate to any aspect of the conference theme, with the participant's institutional affiliation and mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. The abstract/proposal must indicate whether the presentation is an individual paper or a complete panel presentation and if a/v equipment is needed. Presenters are welcome to chair other panels but may only present one paper. Pre-arranged panels must have between 3 and 5 presenters and a chair.
Notifications for proposals will be sent during late fall 2010/early winter 2011 via standard mail to the address provided in this form. Presenters whose proposals are accepted must pay full conference registration fees and 2011 NAES member dues. The e-NASS, outnumbering 5300 subscribers, aims to deepen interaction for further inter/intra/trans/multi-disciplinary communication within the academic community of scholars, professionals and students from all branches of social sciences. The language of communication at e-NASS is English; however, contributions in other languages are highly welcomed should they include an abstract in English. This e-network enthusiastically encourages its members to disseminate and share announcements of Call for Papers, Fellowships/Scholarships, Conferences, Graduate Programs, Websites, Publications, Summer Schools, Jobs, Internships and etc. If you have any scholarly announcement concerning social sciences, please do not hesitate to share it within this e-community. The e-NASS is essentially generalist to revive renaissance wo/men with global and historical perspectives covering from the mist-shrouded steppes of Asia to the sun-drenched African, American and European shores without neglecting the exotic Oceania. In order to protect its subscribers vis-�-vis the virus-spreading, hoax and spam e-mails, the e-NASS is strictly moderated while e-mails containing attachments are automatically removed. This e-network discourages commercial advertisements as well as it is essentially irrelevant to any form of activism or advocacy of any particular perspective. Thus, messages of discussions, demonstrations and calls to action are not permitted. When forwarding e-NASS announcements to your friends and other e-groups, signifying e-NASS as the source will be highly appreciated as extent of your courtesy.
