enclosed please find a CfP for a panel on "Gatekeepers, Networks and
Critical Masses in European Political Science" that is hopefully
relevant for you. The panel is part of the "mapping political science in
Europe" section within the 2011 ECPR General Conference. Paper proposals
can be submitted online at
http://www.ecprnet.eu/conferences/general_conference/Reykjavik/panel_details.asp?panelid=178
We would be most grateful if you could also pass on the CfP to other
colleagues who might be interested.
Best wishes,
Kai Arzheimer/Harald Schoen (U of Mainz/U of Bamberg)
,----[ CfP: Gatekeepers, Networks and Critical Masses (ECPR 2011)]
| Whether we like it or not, all sciences are collective enterprises which
| are shaped by internal and external social and political forces.
| Therefore (and somewhat paradoxically), political scientists should be
| particularly well-positioned to reflect upon the social preconditions
| and constraints of our own discipline.
|
| Over the past decade or so, political scientists have happily responded
| to this challenge and have produced a distinct and growing body of
| knowledge on (amongst other things) factors that determine promotion to
| full professor, the reputation of political science journals, the
| structure of citations and co-publications in said journals, and the
| role of networks in the job market for recent political science PhDs.
|
| So far, however, these efforts have been relatively few and far between.
| Therefore, our knowledge of the internal structures and processes of our
| profession remains sparse and fragmented. Moreover, most existing
| research has been restricted to national Political Science communities
| (read: the US) or to journals which are published in English, thereby
| ignoring the vast diversity of European Political Science and its
| potential for comparative studies.
|
| Consequentially, this panel aims at bringing together scholars who share
| an interest in the empirical study of the social and political
| structures and mechanisms that shape European and global Political
| Science communities, broadly defined. Possible topics include, but are
| not limited to the role of gatekeepers in research funding, the
| mechanisms that govern the system of peer-reviewed journals, values and
| norms scholars subscribe to, the diffusion of new Political Science
| concepts, the (perceived) reputation of departments, journals and
| scholars, and the emergence and definition of "schools", approaches and
| research programs. While we are particularly interested in papers that
| take a comparative approach, case studies are welcome, too.

The e-NASS, outnumbering 5300 subscribers, aims to deepen interaction for further inter/intra/trans/multi-disciplinary communication within the academic community of scholars, professionals and students from all branches of social sciences. The language of communication at e-NASS is English; however, contributions in other languages are highly welcomed should they include an abstract in English. This e-network enthusiastically encourages its members to disseminate and share announcements of Call for Papers, Fellowships/Scholarships, Conferences, Graduate Programs, Websites, Publications, Summer Schools, Jobs, Internships and etc. If you have any scholarly announcement concerning social sciences, please do not hesitate to share it within this e-community. The e-NASS is essentially generalist to revive renaissance wo/men with global and historical perspectives covering from the mist-shrouded steppes of Asia to the sun-drenched African, American and European shores without neglecting the exotic Oceania. In order to protect its subscribers vis-à-vis the virus-spreading, hoax and spam e-mails, the e-NASS is strictly moderated while e-mails containing attachments are automatically removed.
