ISTANBUL ŞEHİR UNIVERSITYDepartment of Political Science and International Relations Debating the Global Public Lecture Series- 5   Western Intervention in Multiculturalism in the Balkans - The Kosovo Case: Local Responses and Blind Spots*   Prof. Ana DEVIC**University of Glasgow,Sociology, Anthropology and Applied Social Sciences   Time: November 25, Thursday // 11.00Venue: Istanbul Şehir University Altunizade Campus Conference Hall

** Ana Devic specializes in the sociology and politics of ethnic divisions, nationality, citizenship, gender, social movements and the politics of film in the Balkans and former Soviet Union as a method of studying nationalism and social conflict. She conducts field work in the region of former Yugoslavia and Eastern Europe, where she is particularly interested in the consequences of globalization and Western interventions in the nationalist violence and civil society building.  . http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/sociology/staff/anadevic/

*Talk Resume:It examines the main features of the Western-assisted non-governmental sector in Kosovo engaged in peace building and multi-ethnic coexistence. It seeks to answer the question why this well-designed civil society, well integrated in the flows of transnational aid industry, has not so far developed significant leverage against the dominant ethno-nationalist politics in Kosovo. A critique of the static model of 'majority-versus-minority' leads the presentation to the recognition of the tension between citizenship as a set of rights, as identity, and as status. The presentation of the (hidden) everyday practices of inter-ethnic cooperation in the realm of work and private communication in Kosovo serves to propose that alternative (ethnographic) approaches be used as advanced methods of conflict-analysis.
