Police say a middle-aged Swedish woman died in hospital after getting into trouble while swimming with dolphins near Kaikoura this morning.
Constable Dean Schroeder of the Kaikoura police said her death was not being treated as suspicious and would be referred to the coroner.
Next of kin were being contacted.
St John Kaikoura operations team manager Don Wright said the woman inhaled a large amount of water while swimming on a trip with Kaikoura business Dolphin Encounter.
She was rescued from the water at 10.30am. The boat immediately returned to shore and an ambulance was called, he said.
Ambulance officers met the Dolphin Encounter boat at South Bay and the woman was treated at the scene, he said. She was delivered to the Kaikoura Medical Centre in a critical condition.
Mr Wright understood she had been travelling with a group of two Swedish women and two men.
Dolphin Encounter general manager Dennis Buurman said the woman's death was unfortunate and distressing for everyone involved. Dolphin Encounter would do everything possible to help the woman's companions, he said.
