e-NASS 3rd International Conference of Mediterranean Worlds

3rd International Conference of Mediterranean Worlds:
Convergence of the Mediterranean:

COMMERCE, CAPITAL AND TRADE ROUTES IN THE HISTORY OF A SEA

Salerno, Italy September 6-9, 2011

An interdisciplinary conference
organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Eastern
Mediterranean University in collaboration with the Department of
Historical and Social Sciences, University of Salerno, The
Mediterranean Seminar and Research Centre of Trans-Mediterranean
Studies -Institut für Kunstgeschichte, University of Bern.
The Mediterranean, in various
literatures, is perceived as infinite: a sphere of unseen
possibilities. Both the sea and its shores are intractably connected and
in constant flux.  Border, boundary, or bridge, the mass of water has
for millennia been divisive or connective for those who inhabit its
shores. Port cities on particular shores share a common hybrid and
cosmopolitan,  socio-economic and political structure.
This is as true today as ever it was in the past: from
pre-history to the 21st century.

Whether the Mediterranean facilitates cultural and
ethnic interplay, or whether we view it as a barrier that separates
civilisations and traditions, a close study of Mediterranean economic
exchange can be revealing. The history of transportation and commercial
activities tells stories of man and culture; the nature of individuals
and societies; problems inherent in shipping routes, and currencies.
Commercial activity, for the purpose of this conference, is the method
of mapping, reading and comprehending the Mediterranean world, and
dialogue with societies beyond its internal shores.

We hope that our rubric of 'Mediterranean Worlds' is broad enough to

encompass the work of scholars researching across the
whole range of aspects of the Mediterranean literature, while at the
same time highlighting this year's special topic of 'commerce, capital
and trade routes'.
We welcome the submission of: Suggested panel
presentations comprising 3-4 presenters and chairperson (please submit
3/4 x 250-word abstract and a short rationale for the panel theme).
