Eagle dies two weeks after 1st flight

TIERRA VERDE - There's a sad ending today to the story of the first baby eagle hatched on Tierra Verde since they started keeping records.

Two weeks ago, our cameras were rolling as "Luna" took her first flight and made it back to the nest safely.

But today the eagle died, just down the road from where she was born. One of the regulars who checked on the eagle family everyday saw her fly to the top of a light pole, then flutter to the ground and collapse.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife will do a necropsy to determine the cause of death.

Out of 45 eagles hatched this year in Pinellas County, this is the second young one to die.
