RE: [forensic-science] hello everyone

Charlotte,

The post below may seem harsh, but the writer makes a very good point. Communicating with professionals requires a different style than chatting with your friends - it requires professionalism. This means using complete sentences (subject, verb, and predicate), proper capitalization, spelling and grammar, and professional etiquette (i.e., manners - when asking for assistance, politely request it, don't demand it). Also, for your own good, please don't ever correspond with your university's administration or any potential employer with your current e-mail address/screen name, as it will not be well received and you will not make a good impression. When dealing with the professional, business, or academic world, take things seriously, and when it doubt be formal (too much formality is better than too little).

That said, your questions are welcome here, and we will do our best to answer them. What would you like to know about forensic science?

"The forensic scientist's goal is the evenhanded use of all available information to determine the facts and, subsequently, the truth."

American Academy of Forensic Sciences web site, Choosing a Career page

"If the law has made you a witness, remain a man of science. You have no victim to avenge, no guilty or innocent person to convict or to save - you must bear testimony within the limits of science."

Dr. P.C.H. Brouardel, 19th Century French Medico-legalist

The teacher in me simply has to respond...

If you are looking for assistance from folks (or eventually a job), you want to demonstrate that you take pride in your work.

This email not only uses all lowercase--which some might argue is becoming the norm (aaauugghhh)-- but it also includes typos...it hasn't even been spellchecked.

insite? ma?

Forensic science is about details, as are most sciences. You won't succeed if you don't care about the little things...a fiber, a hair, a blood droplet, an injection site...

And your demand...'help me out'...will ensure that few, if any, will respond to your email because every profession demands at least the semblance of courtesy.

Lastly, you might consider changing your email address. They're free, so one that presents your more professional side might be warranted.

All offered in the spirit of lifelong learning,

~Too Old to Stifle
