Note The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center proudly presents the traveling exhibit "Sharkabet" by Alaska-based artist Ray Troll as it kicks off its Summer of Sharks programming that will run through August. The individual Sharkabet panels are drawn from Troll's beautifully illustrated shark alphabet book, where he presents 26 living and extinct shark species along with information about these creatures that have been inexistence for more than 400 million years. From angel sharks to zebra sharks, Troll provides a colorful and insightful look into these amazing fish, including several species found in Rookery Bay waters, such as the bullshark and dogfish.
To kick off the opening, the center presents the first in its summer shark lecture series, "Sharks: To Feed or Not to Feed" by Wayne Hasson, president and co-founder of the Aggressor Fleet scuba travel program, president of Oceans for Youth Foundation, and emcee for the summer lecture series. Hasson began his diving career in 1967 and became a dive instructor in 1973. As a recipient of the Platinum Pro Award with over 20,000 dives, he still puts in several hundred underwater hours per year. Hasson received the "Diver of the Year" award given by "Beneath the Sea" for his role in creating several hundred boat moorings that would protect the sea floor and reef systems. He also spent 10 years in the United States Marine Corps.
Today Hasson's main focus is teaching scuba diving to youth and shooting underwater still and video footage for various media companies. He has been a contributing photographer for feature stories for BBC Wildlife, Newsweek, The New York Times, Skin Diver, Sport Diver, and National Geographic, among others. He also worked on feature films and television shows, including The Abyss, Baywatch, Jaws II, Never Say Never, Outdoor Network, Discovery Jones Expeditions, Guy Harvey "Portraits from the DEEP", and behind the scenes filming with Jessica Alba and Paul Walker on "Into the Blue".
Hasson is an all oceans Ship Master / Captain and the only person in the world who on purpose sunk a Russian Destroyer in the Cayman Islands, traveling to Cuba to take charge of this ship. The battle ship was sunk completely intact and is now home to thousands of marine creatures that are visited daily by scuba divers.
The $10 fee includes light refreshments, and registration is required at rookerybay.org.
