Manatees released back into the wild

LEE COUNTY(FL)-

Two manatees are back in the waters of Southwest Florida after a recovering from a boat strike.

Three months after being cooped up in the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, mama Pina and daughter Colada were set free back in the Estero River Wednesday.

In April the pup suffered injury after a run in with a speed boat.

Even though the mother wasn't injured, FWC rescued both of them because the pup is dependent on the mother.

Manatee project manager Virginia Edmonds with the Lowry Park Zoo says the injury to Colada was severe,

"She has an injury caused by an impact from a boat no the propeller so she came in with air trapped in her chest cavity.. she had a collapsed lung"

FWC will monititor the sea cow's whereabouts through a GPS tracking system.
