ORLANDO --
SeaWorld Orlando's Animal Rescue Team said it's using special orthopedic equipment to care for a once-stranded pilot whale.
The female whale has scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, that prevents her from swimming normally.
To treat the whale, SeaWorld's experts worked with the Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic, in Orlando, to develop a custom-fitted brace for the whale that can be adjusted slowly over time.
Vets and animal care experts said hope the brace will help straighten the whale's spine and tail, allowing it to eventually swim normally.
It's the first time this kind of device has ever been used on a large whale.
