My guest on "Talking Animals" Dec. 7 will be DR. NAOMI ROSE, a senior scientist for Humane Society International, specializing in international marine mammal protection issues.
A member of the International Whaling Commission's Scientific Committee, Rose did her doctoral dissertation on the social dynamics of male orcas in British Columbia.
Having heard her speak at an animal conference, I'd planned for some time to invite Dr. Rose on "Talking Animals," and I asked her for Dec. 7 partly to address the recently-filed federal lawsuit seeking the release of Lolita, the orca who performs at the Miami Seaquarium, on the grounds it violates the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Specifically, whale advocates bringing the suit contend that keeping a highly social animal like an orca in captivity, in a tank, constitutes harassment, and the ESA makes such harrasment illegal--and they believe Lolita should be reunited with pod members in the Northwest because Puget Sound's southern resident orcas were listed as endangered in 2005.
Beyond commenting on this gambit, and the implications of seeking Lolita's release, Dr. Rose (whose experience includes participating in the effort to release Keiko, the "Free Willy" whale) will also discuss other marine mammal welfare issues.
Dr. Naomi Rose will speak with us live on "Talking Animals" Dec. 7 at 11am, and listeners are invited to participate in the conversation by calling (813-239-9663) or e-mailing (DJ@wmnf.org).
