MARINA DEL REY, Calif. -- A Southern California man has set sail in an engine-less boat on an 8,000-mile voyage across the Pacific Ocean to raise awareness for the protection and humane treatment of dolphins.

About 100 people gathered late Sunday morning at Marina del Rey Yacht Club, as Jim Sullivan pushed off in the Elusive Spirit, on his way to Cebu, Philippines. Sullivan says he expects the trip in the 30-foot sailboat to take about three months.

Also on board is videographer Armando Valdez Kennedy, who will be shooting underwater footage of dolphins and whales along the way.

Visitors to Sullivan's web site, www.XPac8000.com, can track the journey in real time and donate to support Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project. O'Barry is a renowned dolphin trainer and advocate featured in the Oscar-winning documentary "The Cove."
