TAMPA - An injured manatee and her calf are being treated at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, park officials said.
The mother and baby were spotted Friday in Homosassa Springs, where the mother was beaching herself and having problems staying afloat.
"We're going to continue with intravenous antibiotics, a lot of supportive care, warm water," said Ray Ball, zoo veterinarian. "We'll try to do some diagnostics to see if we can determine what's really going on with her chest does she have an infection or is there some other problem that's keeping her sinking like that."
The staff has been closely monitoring the mother as her condition has worsened. The calf was brought in as well because it's too young to survive on its own.
Right now, vets say the manatee's chances are 50-50. The hope is to nurse and rehabilitate her back into the wild.
