PALM HARBOR --
Officials with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission are offering a reward for information about who shot and killed an osprey in Palm Harbor.
The bird's carcass was found in the Cobb's Landing neighborhood in Palm Harbor on Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the bird had been shot. Ospreys are a protected species under state and federal laws.
The shooter could receive fines and even jail time if convicted. A $700 reward is being offered by the National Audubon Society for information in the case. Residents can contact the FWC at (813) 272-3840.
"We X-rayed the osprey,'' said Ofc. Robert Scholl with the FWC. "We had an expert veterinarian X-ray it and he concluded that the wound was from a gunshot. (The bird) had metal fragments all throughout his body.
"This is serious because they are protected under federal law. They're an integral part of the ecosystem."
