Just weeks ahead of the June 1 Season 5 premiere of "Whale Wars" on Animal Planet, the show's star Paul Watson, 61, has been arrested in Germany, tied to actions he took in 2002 against an illegal shark finning operation.

Waston, founder of the non-profit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was arrested on Saturday in Frankfurt.

Now, actress Brigitte Bardot has spoken out on Watson's behalf.

"Being outraged by the fact that he's been put in prison, I offer to take his place because I am his accomplice," Bardot, 77, said in a statement. "I have always supported Paul Watson, my brother in arms," said the retired French actress who had a Sea Shepherd trimaran named after her in 2011.

At the end of the fourth season of Whale Wars, the Sea Shepherds declared a victory against the Japanese whalers, turning them away and saving hundreds of whales. But when the whalers declared their intentions to return to the Southern Ocean in the Antarctic, the Sea Shepherds scrambled to mobilize their ships and crew to stop them.

The fifth season of "Whale Wars" will feature a one-hour recap documenting the annual whale defense campaign. The eight episodes throughout the season will document the group's "Operation Divine Wind" from December 2011 through February 2012.
