PORTLAND Gray whales have started migrating south along the Oregon coast, and 26 whale watching sites will be set up from Sunday, Dec. 26, until Saturday, Jan. 1.
The "Whale Watching Spoken Here" sitesstretching from Ilwaco, Washington, to Brookings, Oregonwill be staffed with trained volunteers from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. throughout the week.
An estimated 18,000 whales are expected to take part in the migration, according to Dave Newton, with the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center.
"Since most of the whales are traveling three to five miles offshore," Newton said, "visitors are advised to bring binoculars."
The whales are leaving their feeding areas off of Alaska and heading to their breeding and calving lagoons along the Baja Coast, south of California.
The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay will also be open daily.
