CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - A rehabilitated harbor seal was released back into the wild Tuesday morning.

The 4-month-old pup named Ares was released by Mystic Aquarium into the waters of Blue Shutters Beach at 469 East Beach Road in Charlestown.

Ares was rescued at Wells Beach in Maine on July 2, 2011 by the Maine Department of Marine Resources. He was believed to have been abandoned.

After his rescue, he was taken to the University of New England to undergo rehabilitation. He was then transferred to Mystic Aquarium's Seal Rescue Clinic to continue his treatment.

When he was taken in, Ares had several external wounds, but he has recovered well.

Mystic Aquarium Sea Schoolers attended the release as part of a lesson plan.
